Sausage and Green Pepper Naan Pizza
Sausage, red onion and green pepper is one of my favorite pizza combinations. It’s classic Italian….classic Chicago. I’m hooked on it. I’m usually a go-to veggie-only girl when it comes to pizza, but I make an exception for this combination.
In this recipe I use naan bread instead of traditional pizza dough. It’s a little lighter so I don’t feel like I’m overdoing it which usually happens when pizza is involved. Individually sized naan is also easier when cooking for one. Most grocery stores have pre-made naan or if you are feeling ambitious whip up your own like I did. The recipe I use makes 8 naan flat breads. Use them to make pizza or snack on with veggies and hummus.
Sausage and Green Pepper Naan Pizza Recipe
Makes 1 serving pizza; double for 2.
Ingredients
- 1/4 of a red onion, sliced
- 1/4 of a green bell pepper, sliced
- 1 link of Italian sausage
- Olive oil
- 1/8 tsp dried basil
- 1/8 tsp dried oregano
- 2 Tbsp goat cheese
- Naan bread – store bought or homemade.
Directions
Make the Naan
- Either buy pre-made Naan or make it from scratch. I used Half Baked Harvest’s Homemade Naan Recipe and added a sprinkle of cumin and paprika when I cooked it.
- Or substitute pizza bread.
Make the Pizza
- Peel and thinly slice a 1/4 of a red onion.
- Remove the top and seeds from a green bell pepper. Cut a 1/4 of the pepper into thin strips.
- Remove the casing from an Italian sausage.
- Heat a small skillet over medium heat and add the sausage.
- Use a spoon or spatula to break the meat into bite-sized pieces. (I like large chunks.) Cook the meat until browned. Remove the meat and set aside. Return the skillet to the heat.
- Add the red onion and bell pepper to the skillet and sauté until softened, about 4-5 minutes.
- Brush the naan with a drizzle of olive oil. Sprinkle the bread with 1/8 tsp of dried basil and 1/8 tsp dried oregano.
- Add the onion, peppers and meat. Top with chunks of goat cheese, about a total of 2 Tbsp.
- Broil the pizza for 6-8 minutes in an oven or toaster oven until the cheese warms and starts to brown on top.
By the time you add the pizza to the broiler all of the ingredients are cooked so you are just trying to warm and melt the cheese. You may want to add fresh mozzarella for a little more cheese. If so, add additional cooking time for the cheese to melt.
I like the flavor of Italian sausage, but you can substitute whatever flavor you prefer.
